ElisabetaTime series segmentation is employed in various domains and continues to be a relevant topic of research. A segmentation pipeline is composed of different steps involving several parameterizable algorithms. Existing Visual Analytics approaches can help experts determine appropriate parameterizations and corresponding segmentation results for a given dataset. However, the results may also be afflicted with different types of uncertainties. Hence, experts face the additional challenge of understanding the reliability of multiple alternative the segmentation results. So far, the influence of uncertainties in the context of time series segmentation could not be investigated. We present an uncertainty-aware exploration approach for analyzing large sets of multivariate time series segmentations. The approach features an overview of uncertainties and time series segmentations, while detailed exploration is facilitated by (1) a lens-based focus+context technique and (2) uncertainty-based re-arrangement. The suitability of our uncertainty-aware design was evaluated in a quantitative user study, which resulted in interesting findings of general validity.Item Guide Me in Analysis: A Framework for Guidance Designers(© 2020 Eurographics ‐ The European Association for Computer Graphics and John Wiley & Sons Ltd, 2020) Ceneda, Davide; Andrienko, Natalia; Andrienko, Gennady; Gschwandtner, Theresia; Miksch, Silvia; Piccolotto, Nikolaus; Schreck, Tobias; Streit, Marc; Suschnigg, Josef; Tominski, Christian; Benes, Bedrich and Hauser, HelwigGuidance is an emerging topic in the field of visual analytics. Guidance can support users in pursuing their analytical goals more efficiently and help in making the analysis successful. However, it is not clear how guidance approaches should be designed and what specific factors should be considered for effective support. In this paper, we approach this problem from the perspective of guidance designers. We present a framework comprising requirements and a set of specific phases designers should go through when designing guidance for visual analytics. We relate this process with a set of quality criteria we aim to support with our framework, that are necessary for obtaining a suitable and effective guidance solution. To demonstrate the practical usability of our methodology, we apply our framework to the design of guidance in three analysis scenarios and a design walk‐through session. Moreover, we list the emerging challenges and report how the framework can be used to design guidance solutions that mitigate these issues.Item Immersive Analytics of Heterogeneous Biological Data Informed through Need-finding Interviews(The Eurographics Association, 2021) Ripken, Christine; Tusk, Sebastian; Tominski, Christian; Vrotsou, Katerina and Bernard, JürgenThe goal of this work is to improve existing biological analysis processes by means of immersive analytics. In a first step, we conducted need-finding interviews with 12 expert biologists to understand the limits of current practices and identify the requirements for an enhanced immersive analysis. Based on the gained insights, a novel immersive analytics solution is being developed that enables biologists to explore highly interrelated biological data, including genomes, transcriptomes, and phenomes. We use an abstract tabular representation of heterogeneous data projected onto a curved virtual wall. Several visual and interactive mechanisms are offered to allow biologists to get an overview of large data, to access details and additional information on the fly, to compare selected parts of the data, and to navigate up to about 5 million data values in real-time. Although a formal user evaluation is still pending, initial feedback indicates that our solution can be useful to expert biologists.Item Making Parameter Dependencies of Time‐Series Segmentation Visually Understandable(© 2020 Eurographics ‐ The European Association for Computer Graphics and John Wiley & Sons Ltd, 2020) Eichner, Christian; Schumann, Heidrun; Tominski, Christian; Benes, Bedrich and Hauser, HelwigThis work presents an approach to support the visual analysis of parameter dependencies of time‐series segmentation. The goal is to help analysts understand which parameters have high influence and which segmentation properties are highly sensitive to parameter changes. Our approach first derives features from the segmentation output and then calculates correlations between the features and the parameters, more precisely, in parameter subranges to capture global and local dependencies. Dedicated overviews visualize the correlations to help users understand parameter impact and recognize distinct regions of influence in the parameter space. A detailed inspection of the segmentations is supported by means of visually emphasizing parameter ranges and segments participating in a dependency. This involves linking and highlighting, and also a special sorting mechanism that adjusts the visualization dynamically as users interactively explore individual dependencies. The approach is applied in the context of segmenting time series for activity recognition. Informal feedback from a domain expert suggests that our approach is a useful addition to the analyst's toolbox for time‐series segmentation.Item Towards Understanding Edit Histories of Multivariate Graphs(The Eurographics Association, 2022) Berger, Philip; Schumann, Heidrun; Tominski, Christian; Bernard, Jürgen; Angelini, MarcoThe visual analysis of multivariate graphs increasingly involves not only exploring the data, but also editing them. Existing editing approaches for multivariate graphs support visual analytics workflows by facilitating a seamless switch between data exploration and editing. However, it remains difficult to comprehend performed editing operations in retrospect and to compare different editing results. Addressing these challenges, we propose a model describing what graph aspects can be edited and how. Based on this model, we develop a novel approach to visually track and understand data changes due to edit operations. To visualize the different graph states resulting from edits, we extend an existing graph visualization approach so that graph structure and the associated multivariate attributes can be represented together. Branching sequences of edits are visualized as a node-link tree layout where nodes represent graph states and edges visually encode the performed edit operations and the graph aspects they affect. Individual editing operations can be inspected by dynamically expanding edges to detail views on demand. In addition, we support the comparison of graph states through an interactive creation of attribute filters that can be applied to other states to highlight similarities.Item Unfolding Edges for Exploring Multivariate Edge Attributes in Graphs(The Eurographics Association, 2021) Bludau, Mark-Jan; Dörk, Marian; Tominski, Christian; Byška, Jan and Jänicke, Stefan and Schmidt, JohannaWith this research we present an approach to network visualization that expands the capabilities for visual encoding and interactive exploration through edges in node-link diagrams. Compared to the various possibilities for visual and interactive properties of nodes, there are few techniques for interactive visualization of multivariate edge attributes in node-link diagrams. Visualization of edge attributes is oftentimes limited by occlusion and space issues of methods that globally encode attributes in a node-link diagram for all edges, not sufficiently exploiting the potential of interaction. Building up on existing techniques for edge encoding and interaction, we propose 'Unfolding Edges' as an exemplary use of an on-demand detail enhancing approach for exploration of multivariate edge attributes.Item Unfolding Edges: Adding Context to Edges in Multivariate Graph Visualization(The Eurographics Association and John Wiley & Sons Ltd., 2023) Bludau, Mark-Jan; Dörk, Marian; Tominski, Christian; Bujack, Roxana; Archambault, Daniel; Schreck, TobiasExisting work on visualizing multivariate graphs is primarily concerned with representing the attributes of nodes. Even though edges are the constitutive elements of networks, there have been only few attempts to visualize attributes of edges. In this work, we focus on the critical importance of edge attributes for interpreting network visualizations and building trust in the underlying data. We propose 'unfolding of edges' as an interactive approach to integrate multivariate edge attributes dynamically into existing node-link diagrams. Unfolding edges is an in-situ approach that gradually transforms basic links into detailed representations of the associated edge attributes. This approach extends focus+context, semantic zoom, and animated transitions for network visualizations to accommodate edge details on-demand without cluttering the overall graph layout. We explore the design space for the unfolding of edges, which covers aspects of making space for the unfolding, of actually representing the edge context, and of navigating between edges. To demonstrate the utility of our approach, we present two case studies in the context of historical network analysis and computational social science. For these, web-based prototypes were implemented based on which we conducted interviews with domain experts. The experts' feedback suggests that the proposed unfolding of edges is a useful tool for exploring rich edge information of multivariate graphs.
