Supporting Visual Analysis in Smart Meeting Rooms
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Radloff, Axel; Fuchs, Georg; Schumann, Heidrun; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
Smart meeting rooms as a specific form of multi-display environments (MDE) feature ad-hoc ensembles of heterogeneous devices and software tools to facilitate collective work and information sharing between multiple users. This makes them excellent environments for supporting visual analytics sessions. Effective use of MDE requires not only appropriate visual representations of the information needed by each user for her current task but also the efficient utilization of available display space by means of suitable view management. In this paper, we propose a task-driven approach to Smart View Management that combines automated task-based view configuration with interactive user specification of selected analysis task aspects. It is based on a general task typology capable of expressing the role of individual data views with respect to a given, possibly compound analysis task. The feasibility of the proposed approach is discussed by virtue of a use case from the climate impact research domain.

PCDC - On the Highway to Data - A Tool for the Fast Generation of Large Synthetic Data Sets
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Bremm, Sebastian; Heß, Martin; Landesberger, Tatiana von; Fellner, Dieter W.; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
In this paper, we present Parallel Coordinates for Data Creation (PCDC), a new visual-interactive method for the fast generation of labeled multidimensional data sets. Multivariate data need to be analyzed in various domains such as finance, biology or medicine using complex data mining techniques. For the evaluation or presentation of the techniques, e.g., for assessing their sensitivity to specific data properties, test data need to be generated. PCDC allows for a fast and intuitive creation of multivariate data with several classes. It is based on interactive definition of data regions and data distributions in a parallel coordinates view. It offers a quick definition of data regions over several dimensions in one interface. Moreover, the users can directly see the outcome of their settings in the same view without the need for switching between data generation and output visualization. Our tool enables also an easy adjustment of the data generation parameters for creating additional similar datasets.

Visual Analytics for Dynamic Evacuation Planning
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Reddy, Rajesh; Höferlin, Markus; Dambier, Michael; Weiskopf, Daniel; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
We use visual analytics to assist human experts in the verification of evacuation schedules and enable them to identify the bottle-necks in building evacuation. The user can change parameters, such as the number of occupants present in the rooms, the parametric settings for fire simulation, the building design, etc. and analyze their effect on evacuation. Visualization of the people flow in the building combined with the computational techniques plays a great role in analyzing the evacuation process. This helps in understanding the movement of the people during evacuation, possible delays in evacuation process, etc. and it provides feedback to the user. We introduce a novel priority based distributed evacuation routing (PDER) algorithm that produces dynamic evacuation schedules and is designed to work smoothly and seamlessly in interactive exploratory environments for visual analysis of dynamically updated evacuation schedules.

Scalable Cluster Analysis of Spatial Events
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Peca, Iulian; Fuchs, Georg; Vrotsou, Katerina; Andrienko, Natalia; Andrienko, Gennady; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
Clustering of massive data is an important analysis tool but also challenging since the data often does not fit in RAM. Many clustering algorithms are thus severely memory-bound. This paper proposes a deterministic density clustering algorithm based on DBSCAN that allows to discover arbitrary shaped clusters of spatio-temporal events that (1) achieves scalability to very large datasets not fitting in RAM and (2) exhibits significant execution time improvements for processing the full dataset compared to plain DBSCAN. The proposed algorithm's integration with interactive visualization methods allows for visual inspection of clustering results in the context of the analysis task; several alternatives are discussed by means of an application example about traffic data analysis.

A System for Query Based Analysis and Visualization
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Sanderson, Allen R.; Whitlock, Brad; Rübel, Oliver; Childs, Hank; Weber, Gunther; Prabhat, Mr; Wu, Kenseng; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
Today scientists are producing large volumes of data that they wish to explore and visualize. In this paper we describe a system that combines range-based queries with fast lookup to allow a scientist to quickly and efficiently ask "what if?" questions. Unique to our system is the ability to perform "cumulative queries" that work on both an intra- and inter-time step basis. The results of such queries are visualized as frequency histograms and are the input for secondary queries, the results of which are then visualized.

Developing an Extended Task Framework for Exploratory Data Analysis Along the Structure of Time
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Lammarsch, Tim; Rind, Alexander; Aigner, Wolfgang; Miksch, Silvia; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
Exploratory data analysis of time-oriented data is an important goal that Visual Analytics has to tackle. When users from real-world domains are asked about time-oriented tasks, they often refer to the unique structure of time (e.g., calendars, primitives, etc.). Several task frameworks have been developed, but none of them combines a complete, systematic approach with explicit attention to the structure of time. To fill this gap, we aim for complementing an established task framework with a rule set that explicitly models the structure of time for tasks. This rule set allows to consistently formulate tasks for evaluating time-oriented data analysis methods.

Visual Exploration of Feature-Class Matrices for Classification Problems
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Kienreich, Wolfgang; Seifert, Christin; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
When a classification algorithm does not work on a data set, it is a non-trivial problem to figure out what went wrong on a technical level. It is even more challenging to communicate findings to domain experts who can interpret the data set but do not understand the algorithms. We propose a method for the interactive visual exploration of the feature-class matrix used to represent data sets for classification purposes. This method combines a novel matrix reordering algorithm revealing patterns of interest with an interactive visualization application. It facilitates the investigation of feature-class matrices and the identification of reasons for failure or success of a classifier on the feature level. We discuss results obtained by applying the method to the Reuters text collection.

Visual Analysis of Explicit Opinion and News Bias in German Soccer Articles
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Oelke, Daniela; Geißelmann, Benno; Keim, Daniel A.; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
Most state-of-the-art opinion and sentiment analysis techniques were developed for customer feedback data or reviews. Applying them to another domain is often not possible because the algorithms are based on the assumption that the opinions are expressed explicitly in the text. However, news articles, for instance, convey an opinion in a more subtle manner. In this work we analyze German soccer articles with respect to the sentiment that is expressed in them. Besides adapting conventional sentiment analysis algorithms to the specific domain, we also investigate what can be measured with these techniques and what should be measured on news articles according to communication scientists. We suggest to bridge the existing gap with visual analytics methods and demonstrate the usability of the techniques on a concrete application example.

Visual Text Analytics using Semantic Networks and Interactive 3D Visualization
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Drieger, Philipp; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
Facing the growth of textual information, the analysis of unstructured text data remains a challenge for visual analytics. Most text visualizations are based on models that use word frequencies for text vectorization and representation. As semantics reveal from word relations, we propose an integrated visual text analytics approach that utilizes semantic networks in an interactive 3D workspace for exploration and analysis. Semantic networks act as an intermediary structure for data modeling and interactive visualization to support the visual analytics process. Focussing on the integration of text analysis and visualization, this paper describes our system design and its preliminary implementation. Discussing typical usage scenarios and a practical field-test, we present a strategy for text exploration and analysis to illustrate the usage of our system in an exemplary use case.

AMPLIO VQA - A Web Based Visual Query Analysis System for Micro Grid Energy Mix Planning
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Stoffel, Andreas; Zhang, Leishi; Weber, Stefan Hagen; Keim, Daniel A.; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
Micro grid technology brings the opportunity to integrate renewable energies with a traditional energy mix on a regional level and to achieve specific local goals. To obtain an optimal energy mix plan, different scenarios need to be simulated and analyzed. However, effective tools for analyzing such simulation results are lacking. Here we present an interactive visual query analysis tool designed for that purpose. The tool integrates effective visualization techniques and advanced pattern detection methods.

Visual Analytics of Microblog Data for Pandemic and Crisis Analysis
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Pritchard, Iwan C.; Walker, Rick; Roberts, Jonathan C.; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
Microblogging is a rich and plentiful source of data that contains potentially valuable information amidst noise. This work presents software that extracts useful metadata from a microblog dataset to explore and analyze the data for the detection and exploration of crisis events. The developed software (Vambutu) was successfully used to examine an artificially-generated dataset for the onset and source of an illness outbreak. A part of speech tagger was used to divide microblog posts into their component parts for the purposes of identifying posts pertaining to first, second, and third-hand experiences. A successful demonstration of this ability revealed clearly identifiable patterns for first-hand experiences. For example, for the word pneumonia we found patterns that were not apparent when all posts pertaining to pneumonia were examined at once. This promising result demonstrates the potential as a tool for filtering out irrelevant noise during the occurrence of a crisis event.

The News Auditor: Visual Exploration of Clusters of Stories
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Behrisch, Michael; Krstajic, Milos; Schreck, Tobias; Keim, Daniel A.; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
In recent years, the quantity of content generated by news agencies and blogs is constantly growing, making it difficult for readers to process and understand this overwhelming amount of data. Online news aggregators present clusters of similar stories in a simple, list-based manner, where the most important article is shown first, while all the other similar articles appear below as hyperlinked headlines. This layout makes the user unaware of the content differences between articles, thus making it very difficult to get a comprehensive picture. Understanding what was changed, how, when and by whom, would lead to new insights about the content distribution over the internet and help in dealing with the news overload problem. We present a visual analytics tool that allows the user to compare the articles that belong to the same story and understand the differences at three levels of detail. Story matrix provides an overview of a document cluster, where the user can identify articles of interest based on their overall similarity and reorder them by different criteria. Structural view shows document thumbnails with highlighted paragraphs of the text that were copied, modified or repositioned by different sources. Finally, Document level view presents two articles side by side to provide full-text comparison. To evaluate our tool, we present two user scenarios applied on a real world data set.

MultiNode-Explorer: A Visual Analytics Framework for Generating Web-based Multimodal Graph Visualizations
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Ghani, Sohaib; Elmqvist, Niklas; Ebert, David S.; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
We propose MultiNode-Explorer, a visual analytics framework that is capable of transforming multidimensional datasets into an entity-relationship (E-R) model and visualizing the data as node-link diagrams. The framework accepts an E-R schema, a set of relational data tables, and an interface specification file, and generates a multimodal and multivariate graph and a corresponding interactive applet for viewing the graph in a web browser. We show examples for a large research organization, a visual search engine for a Wiki, and for NSF funding data.

Ontology Visualization: One Size Does Not Fit All
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Silva, Isabel da; Santucci, Giuseppe; Freitas, Carla del Sasso; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
Visualization techniques have been used for ontology representation to allow the comprehension of concepts and properties in specific domains. Due to the complexity and size of ontologies such techniques need to be efficient in showing all the concepts and relationships in a intuitive visualization. We propose a novel use of the Degree of Interest notion in order to reduce the complexity of the representation itself and draw the user attention to the main concepts for a given task. Through an automatic analysis of the ontology aspects, we place the main concept in focus, distinguishing it from the unnecessary information and facilitating the analysis and understanding of correlated data. This new Degree of Interest calculation can be easily adapted to different user tasks. Besides, we extended a multiple coordinated views approach proposed in previous works for exploring the intensional structure of an ontology. We also present a tool implementing these ideas as a proof-of-concept prototype.

Interactive Visual Analysis of Ethological Studies: Getting Insight from Large Ensembles of Animals' Paths
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Matkovic, Kresimir; Winding, Christiana; Splechtna, Rainer; Balka, Michael; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
In this paper we describe how interactive visual analysis can be efficiently used to analyze a large ensemble of animal paths. Behavioral studies of animals are carried out in order to gain new insight in animal behavior, influence of drugs and various physiological processes. We illustrate how a coordinated multiple views system can complement conventional analysis and enable new insights in complex data. The newly proposed methodology is being tested with domain experts from University of Veterinary Medicine, and first feedback is very positive. Several illustrative examples based on data from more than 800 observations are presented.

Visual Analysis of Public Transport Vehicle Movement
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Wörner, Michael; Ertl, Thomas; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
Public transport vehicles record detailed operational logs. In major networks, this quickly amounts to massive datasets. Traditionally, these are analysed only using statistical tools, yet they show great potential for the successful application of visual analytics techniques and the integration of different visualizations in order to improve service quality and passenger comfort. We present a visual analytics tool for the analysis of such data and apply it to a real-world dataset of actual public transport vehicle movements.

Graph Visualization Using Hierarchical Edge Routing and Bundling
(The Eurographics Association, 2012) Kienreich, Wolfgang; Wozelka, Ralph; Sabol, Vedran; Seifert, Christin; Kresimir Matkovic and Giuseppe Santucci
Driven by rapidly growing application areas such as semantic knowledge bases and social networks, visualization of large graphs has been gaining importance recently. A large amount of nodes and intersecting edges presents a major challenge for usability and aesthetics, and may also pose a scalability problem. Edge routing and bundling methods proved useful for reducing clutter, while hierarchical techniques, besides providing the basis for level of detail rendering, also address scalability. We present work in progress which combines hierarchical techniques with edge routing and bundling methods, and utilizes their respective advantages. The proposed graph visualization method employs hierarchical aggregation of graph nodes and edges, and applies edge routing and bundling along the hierarchy to reduce clutter and improve the clarity of the representation.
