Mass Market Applications for Real Time 3D Graphics
(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1989) Plummer, Michael; Penna, David
This paper discusses the applicability of real time 3D image synthesis to mass market products. Likely application areas are covered. There is discussion of the man machine interface problems arising in systems where it has to be assumed that little or no training will be provided. A research prototype package, a kitchen designer which allows a user to design and view a kitchen in real time, is described in some detail. Emphasis is given to aspects of the user interface design such as 3D navigational aids. Finally there is consideration of the system performance level required.

The Incremental Display of a Single-Valued Curve
(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1989) Smith, F.J.; Leitch, S.
A new algorithm is described for the drawing of a single-valued smooth function on a raster screen. It first approximates the function by a spline, normally cubic, and then displays the spline using a combination of finite differences and a special Bresenham type algorithm in integer arithmetic. Finite difference have not been successful previously, partly because of the build up of rounding errors. We show that for a modern workstation with 32 bit-integers these errors can be estimated and the algorithm modified to minimise their effect. The result of combining all of these factors, spline, finite differences, error control, geometry and integer arithmetic is a powerful algorithm which we believe is generally more accurate and faster than previous algorithms for smooth curves. It is worth noting that when the curve is a straight line, our algorithm becomes an extension (and minor improvement) on Bresenham s algorithm.

A Framework for Functional Specification and Transformation of Hidden Surface Elimination Algorithms
(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1989) Lakshminarasimhan, A.L.; Srivas, Mandayam
This paper deals with the theory of hidden surface elimination algorithms in Computer Graphics. A set of functions and abstract data types are defined to help concisely specify a class of hidden surface elimination algorithms in a purely functional language. A formal study of these algorithms is presented here along with theorems of equivalence between some of the specifications. It is shown here that such proofs of equivalence will help in the construction of existing as well as new algorithms. We bring in the importance of such a study to exploit alternative parallel architectures for implementation of these algorithms. The other benefits of formal specification and analysis are due to its use as a teaching aid and effective method for rapid prototyping of these algorithms.

Two Parallel Methods for Polygon Clipping
(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1989) Theoharis, Theoharis; Page, Ian
A control parallel and a novel data parallel implementation of the Sutherland-Hodgman polygon clipping algorithm are presented. The two implementations are based on the INMOS transputer and the AMT Distributed Array Processor respectively- both of these machines are general purpose parallel processors. Performance Figures are reported and implications for further work are discussed.

    Image Representations Using Miranda Laws
(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1989) Parsons, Michael S.
The applicative language Miranda is used to define various image representations. One particular feature of this language, an algebraic data type with laws, is shown to be very powerful in giving and automatically maintaining properties of these image structures. This enables simple definitions of graphical ideas such as the following: quadtrees which are always fully condensed, self-dividing line lists which produce fractal images, and primitives restricted to certain areas of the screen or to certain orientations.

The Problematics of Human Prototyping and Animation
(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1989) Magnenat-Thalmann, Nadia; Thalmann, Daniel
Several ideas and experiments are presented for the creation and realistic animation of three-dimensional scenes involving human beings conscious of their environment. The various approaches should allow the intelligent creation of human beings using prototypes and generate their animation based on mechanics, artificial intelligence and robotics. This paper discusses the problems involved in three major steps of the simulation of human beings: the creation of the human shapes, the motion of the human skeleton, and the deformation of the surfaces. Several examples are presented illustrating positional constraints, dynamics, behavioural animation and finite element theory.

    The Controller Animation System
(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1989) John, Nigel W.; Willis, Philip J.
One of the ways in which computer animation can be generated is to use interactive graphics systems. In this paper we describe Controller, an animation system of this type. We concentrate on the operation of Controller and detail how an animator can plan and choreograph the motion of objects and cameras. We have intended to provide a system that gives the animator as much control as possible subject to keeping die interface simple to operate.

    The Line-Picture Attribute
(Blackwell Publishing Ltd and the Eurographics Association, 1989) Gossling, T.H.
The linetype attribute in GKS and PHIGS is required to cover a wide variety of renderings of the polyline primitive. The results are strongly implementation-dependent, widi virtually no user control. Splitting linetype into a one-dimensional line-pattern and a two-dimensional line-picture gives much greater flexibility, without the need to go through a registration process for every new style. The line-picture attribute, consisting of a single glyph repeated at intervals along a linear primitive, can answer many requirements in draughting for process industries, and should also be applicable elsewhere.
