Item Restructuring Computer Graphics and Visualisation Curricula at IST(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Lopes, J. M. Brisson; Gomes, M. R.; Bernardo, J. C.; Jorge, J.; Pereira, J. McGrathThis paper addresses the restructuring of the undergraduate and graduate programs in Computer Graphics, Visualisation and Multimedia that was recently carried out at Instituto Superior Técnico. The paper details th e rationale for the changes in both curricula and course contem and describes the new structure. The result is a coherent and complete series of co urses spanning the undergraduate and M.Sc. degrees in lnformatics Engineering. lt further discusses the structure of the basic course on Computer Graphics within this context and draws conclusions to contribute to the ongoing discussion on Computer Graphics, Visualisation and Multimedia curricula.Item MAVERIK: A Virtual Reality System for Research and Teaching(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Howard, Toby; Hubbold, Roger; Murta, Alan; José Carlos Teixeira; Werner Hansmann; Michael B. McGrathThis paper describes some experiences with the use of the MAVERIK system for supporting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research. MAVERIK is a high-level system for creating and managing interactive virtual environments. lt is available free under the GNU General Public Licence. MAVERIK is modular and extensible, and its use of Mesa, the free OpenGL-like graphics system, means that it can be run on low- cost PCs, making it especially suitable for use in computer graphics and visualization education. We discuss the novel architecture and main features of MAVERIK, and illustrate its use by presenting case studies of projects udertaken by our students.Item Scientific Visualization as a Tool for Power Engineering Education(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Slavik, Pavel; Hrdlicka, Frantisck; José Carlos Teixeira; Werner Hansmann; Michael B. McGrathThis paper deals with the application of scientific visualization methods in the field of power engineering education. Behavior of various parts of a power plant is simulated and the results of these simulations are visualized. The visualization of processes that run in a power plant gives the students an opportunity to understand better the nature of these processes. This approach solves one of the main problems in power engineering education: the students usually have no chance to see various types of power plants in practice. The existence of models and their corresponding visualization allows students to perform experiments with various devices and in such a way acquire a much deeper knowledge about the subjects taught.Item Visualisation in teaching-leaming mathematics: the role of the computer(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Chiappini, G.; Bottino, R. A theoretical analysis is worked out in order to give account of the complex phenomena that take place in the classroom in order to allow students to construct a mental image of lhe mnthematical object involved in the activity. This theoretical analysis is the reference to study the different didactical functions that information visualisation can develop in learning process. McGrathA Visualization course offered twice (1997/98 and 98/99) as an elective in the MSc degree on Electronics and Telecommunications at the University of Aveiro is presented. lts contents, bibliography and teaching methods are described. The paper addresses the course contents and its pedagogical approach as well as the communicatiom facilities used in the 1998/99 academic year to support the course operation.Item Adapting Computer Graphics Curricula to Changes in Graphics Technology(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Hitchner, Lewis E.; Sowizral, Henry A.; José Carlos Teixeira; Werner Hansmann; Michael B. McGrathIntroductory computer graphics courses are changing their focus and learning environments. Improvements in hardware and software technology coupled with changes in preparation, interest, and abilities of incoming students are driving the need for curriculum change. Past courses focussed on low- and intermediate-level rendering principies, algorithms, and software development tools. Many of these algorithms have migrated into hardware. Though important knowledge for advanced graphics programmers, most graphics applications programmers have no need to study at this level, much as application programmers have no need to study hardware systems or assembly level programming. Courses need to focus on intermediate- and high-level principies, algorithms, and tools. A fundamental need in modern graphics curricula is integration of a 3D graphics API into the instruction. This paper presents experiences teaching this focus with both low and high level graphics programming API`s . The collaborative models and innovative delivery systems described in this document provide "real world" experience, initiate accelerated learning and develop flexible structures for curriculum that meet the needs of business, industry, the learner and the educational environment. These models and samples address many of the current issues facing the computer graphics profession.Item Web Based Multi-User Interactive Graphics Worlds for Education(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Owen, G. Scott; José Carlos Teixeira; Werner Hansmann; Michael B. McGrathSeveral technologies are curremly being developed that will have a huge impact on the future of education. Advances in computational power and graphics capability will give the future home PC the capabilities of very high-end workstations of the present. Advances in connectivity will allow everybody to be connected at all times with a very high bandwidth. Advances in computer graphics software technology, combined with advances in other fields, such as simulation and artificial life, will allow us to create realistic worlds for students to investigate. These worlds will be Multi-User Shared Environments (MUSE), i.e., students will be able to interact with instructors, other students, and intelligent agents in these worlds. ln this paper, I will briefly discuss the background issues, vision for the future with some specific examples, and our current efforts in this area.Item The Development of a Digital Library to Support the Teaching of Computer Graphics and Visualization(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Owen, G. We discuss the history of the website, including a long-standing partnership with the National Science Foundation, and the current work to evolve it into a Digital Library. McGrathNew technologies for distance Jearning through the Web, vídeo conferencing, collaborative working toais have the potential to enhance and extend learning. This requires a large leap for many institutions, teachers and students as well as an investment in technology and training. Many of those involved in graphics and visualization have in some way contributed to the development of the technologies being used and to their potential application use. McGrathItem Combining Art and Mathematics in Computer Graphics Education(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Ollila, Mark; José Carlos Teixeira; Werner Hansmann; Michael B. McGrathThis paper presents an innovative education program ai the University of Cavie, Sweden. The program, Creative Programming, combines traditional methods of teaching compuler graphics, with other cross- disciplinary areas such as art, cognition, and film. The uniqueness of the program is represented by the students that are accepted and the teaching environment they are put in. A judicial process is used to screen applicants, with and without portfolios to the program. This is followed by an examination of intellectual capacity, practical examination, and finally an interview. Together, these are used as guidelines to determine if the student is a suitable candidate for the program. The final group selected has varying backgrounds, ranging from the professional artist to the traditional computer scientist. They are then immersed in a lab environment for the whole duration of the education on the campushe remainder of the education involves a period in industry. The combination of selective students, a lab environment has produced very satisfactory result, and can be used as basis for further developing the education.Item Strengthening Visual Skills by Recognising Rendering Algorithms(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Wolfe, Rosalee; José Carlos Teixeira; Werner Hansmann; Michael B. McGrathComputer science students contemplating a career in graphics need to develop a visual sense, but traditional course topies do not meet this need. Visual analysis is a teaching technique developed for computer science instructors that helps impart this ability. Through the use of a few visual cues, students learn to visually identify surface algorithms, shaders and lighting techniques. An interactive software package called TERA (Tool for Exploring Rendering Algorithms) provides nearly a million image combinations that students can use to practice their visual identification skills.Item Modularity: The Key to Courseware Re-use(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Teixeira, José Carlos; José Carlos Teixeira; Werner Hansmann; Michael B. McGrathComputers have recently emerged as commonplace on the scene in a record number of uiversity art departments. This rapid change has created the need for n ew curriculum in the computer art discipline. ln designing these courses I see three ideas that are paramount to any computer graphics curriculum in the visual arts. First, the courses and course work should focus on individual expression and creativity, second, the instruction should include an awareness of the "wow" factor, and third, the courses should include a balance of computer art, traditional art, computer science, and academics such as theory, art history, and criticism.Item Computer Graphics in the Scope of Informatics Engineering education(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Santos, Manuel Próspero dos; José Carlos Teixeira; Werner Hansmann; Michael B. McGrathAt the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon, the education in lnformatics Engineering has been supportcd by a B.Sc. course and a M.Sc. course. Both of them include Computer Graphics lectures; being the corresponding curricula adapted as much as possible to the other basic scientific matters. 0n the other hand, the tools and teaching methods have also been acconnnodated according to the global resources available at the Faculty for those courses, namely the computational ones. The paper presents the methodologies used today for teaching Computer Graphics at the New University of Lisbon, gives the results of some succeeded experiments, refers the most relevant relationships with other subjects and put important questions to the future of Computer Graphics education in the scope Informatics Engineering.Item Bringing the Introductory Computer Graphics Course into the 21 st Century(The Eurographics Association, 2023) Wolfe, Rosalee; José Carlos Teixeira; Werner Hansmann; Michael B. McGrathThe field of computer graphics has matured greatly since the formal statement of the introductory undergraduate course for computer science majors was created for ACM/IEEE Curriculum 91, and introductory courses need to reflect the substantive changes in the discipline. Recenf discussions with graphics educators and a syllabus survey have found six trends in recent course offerings. Perhaps these findings will evolve into a basis upon which people can develop courses that fit their local needs as well as reflecting the changingfield.
